Arctic Frontiers - Knowledge for Ocean Sustainability

Arctic Frontiers - Knowledge for Ocean Sustainability will focus on knowledge-based management of the Arctic Ocean through science-informed policy making, marine engineering, and innovative ocean technology.

The Arctic Ocean, which covers large parts of the Arctic, contains resources that may provide a growing global population with energy, proteins and medicines. At the same time, the health of the Arctic Ocean is under threat from changes in temperature, freshwater content, acidification and a shrinking ice cover.

New shipping routes are opening up, and new resources are becoming available for extraction. For coastal communities and businesses in the Arctic, these developments present both challenges and opportunities.

In order to reverse the decline in ocean health worldwide, the UN has proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). The goal is to ensure that ocean sciences can support countries in creating improved conditions for sustainable ocean development.

Building the science we need for the Oceans we want, this seminar will look at how we can cooperate to foster scientific knowledge of the marine environment, natural resources and smart technologies.
