Facebook has appointed experienced civic society communications executive Aanchal Mehta to lead the social media network’s policy programmes and communications in Asia Pacific.

Based in Singapore, Mehta takes on a role to develop strategies and assets to communicate Facebook’s economic and social impact and corporate responsibility narratives with policy stakeholders in the region. She will work in support of the marketing and communications team.

Facebook was recently targeted by businesses that demanded the firm make more of an effort to remove hate speech on the platform. Facebook has said it will tag potentially harmful posts and pointed out that it has taken down most offending posts.

Mehta joins Facebook after less than a year with 350.org, a non-profit that campaigns for clean energy. She was 350.org’s deputy director of global traditional communications.

Her new role marks a return to the for-profit sector for Mehta, who previously worked in marketing for jewellery brand The Jewell Box and brand analysis firm Superbrands.

Before joining 350.org, Mehta was head of communications, environmental health for clean-air advocacy group Vital Strategies.

She also had a long spell with World Wide for Nature (WWF), where she led the NGO’s annual environmental awareness campaign Earth Hour. Another noteable campaign she worked on highlighted the sustainability of palm oil used by Malaysia and Singapore’s leading household brands.
