Leong moves on after three and a half years with the bank to take on a role running the life and health insurer’s ESG drive. Her role will involve working with AIA group functions locally, and ensuring compliance with regional ESG policies.
Her appointment comes a month after AIA committed to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
AIA recently announced it would sell off almost US$10 billion of investments in coal mining and coal-fired power, and pledged to avoid making new investments in businesses directly involved in coal mining or generating electricity from coal.
Leong will report to AIA Singapore’s chief executive, Wong Sze Keed. She joins seven months after Amita Chaudary joined AIA from Unilever as group head of sustainability, a regional role at the company.
Over her career, Leong has worked in sustainability roles for chemicals firm DyStar and real estate business Jones Lang LaSalle. She started her career as an executive in the sustainability team of agribusiness Wilmar International.
During her time at UOB, Leong was secretariat for the UOB group sustainability committee, and managed the integration of the company’s sustainability strategy across the business.
