The deforestation of the Amazon forest in Brazil fell 27 per cent following improved policing of forests and better surveillance technology. Data released from the Brazil Environment Ministry said in July 2012, deforestation in the Amazon was estimated at 4,656 square kilometres, 27 per cent lower compared to the same period last year. The Ministry said in 2013 they will start using satellite monitoring technology to track slash-and-burn activities.
