Australia miracle greenhouse grows food in the desert

A farm in South Australia is now touted as an agricultural miracle: It is growing cheap, high-quality, pesticide-free vegetables in commercial quantities, and all by using energy-efficient greenhouses. Sundrop Farms in Port Augusta was built by a mixed group from Europe, Asia, and North America. The company’s founder and CEO is 33 year-old German Philipp Saumweber, who used to be a Goldman Sachs banker before he bought an unpromising lot in the Australian outback to create an experimental greenhouse. That greenhouse does not use fresh water and consumes zero fossil fuels. Instead, it runs on solar power to desalinate seawater for irrigation and to heat and cool the facility. The successful project is now attracting the attention of investors and supermarket chains hoping to get an exclusive contract.
