Sydney’s 1 Bligh Street is an architectural icon that is continuing to receive recognition both nationally and around the world.
Standing as Australia’s first green skyscraper, 1 Bligh Street reached the pinnacle of architectural acclaim when it was awarded the title of Australasia’s ‘Best Tall Building’ by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The building, which is designed by architectural firms Architctus and Ingehoven Architekten is a testament to modern green innovation.
This large-scale green building has gained considerable acclaim for its central dual-functioning skylight/ventilation atrium, which appealed strongly to the judging committee. Jury panel member Werner Sobek notes this feature as pivotal the overall function and feel of the building.
“The dramatic, naturally ventilated central atrium connects the office workers with nature at the inner depths of the plan, giving a sense of openness for the entire building,” he says.
Four buildings in total have been handed down the title of ‘best tall building’ from across the globe in each of their regions. To be awarded this title, buildings had to show design and technical innovation, sustainable attributes and an ability to enhance both the cities in which they are located and lives of those cities’ inhabitants. Committee chairman Richard Cook of Cook + Fox architects states that these elements are vital to achieve the highest quality of modern skyscraper design.
“The winners display remarkable creativity, as well as a respect for the environment, connection with place, and the urban surroundings,” he says.
Further winners include Absolute Towers located in Mississauga, Canada for the Americas region, Palazzo Lombardia, Milan for the Europe region and the Doha Tower in Doha for the Middle East and Africa region.
The win marks the first time an Australian building has been awarded a ‘Best Building’ title. Green buildings are increasingly winning ‘best of’ accolades in each sector. It is this strong recognition for holistic buildings that are green, functional and aesthetically pleasing that is motivating a new generation of industry members to design in a way that meets these high standards.
