Better business brings on bigger global emissions for 2011

Global carbon emissions grew 2.5 per cent to 34 billion tonnes in 2011 as industrial activity bounced back from the global economic crisis recently. Germany’s renewable energy institute, who reported the new record, said this current trend puts the world on a path to reach 40 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2020. The highest-emitting country in the list is China with 8.9 billion tonnes, up from 8.3 billion, year on year. China also widened its emissions gap with the US, whose emissions were pegged at 6 billion tonnes. India, comes third, followed by Russia, Japan and Germany.

The IWR has long been asking the world’s highest emitters to match their country’s carbon output with mandatory investments on renewables and climate protection equipment.
