Indonesia’s energy minister said he was bewildered over the Balinese government’s refusal to allow a geothermal project to go ahead in the Bedugul area, but confirmed the island would have sufficient electricity without the 165 megawatt plant. Bali, which brings in electricity through an underwater cable from Java, has opposed the geothermal project on environmental and religious grounds since its proposal in 2005. At peak times, the island - which has rapidly growing tourism and events industries - has an excess capacity of only 80MW.
