Malaysian biofuel expert Professor Pogaku Ravindra predicted a drastic increase in the percentage of biofuel to meet the world’s liquid energy demands. He said governments were increasingly adopting policies - such as US and Brazilian regulations to include ethanol in petrol for vehicles - that encourage biofuel uptake to increase energy security and decrease carbon emissions.
Biofuels have come under fire recently because many projects compete with agriculture for land and drive up food prices, and because some studies have shown that emissions from biofuels are often underestimated.
