Canberra is paving the way towards high-density housing in Australia. Data from the Annual State of Australian Cities 2012 report show that Canberra’s high-density construction has jumped 40 per cent since 1985. The capital also now has the highest proportion of attached dwelling approvals. But Tony Trobe of the Australian Institute of Architects said there are many areas that are still low-density due to changes in the planning guidelines as a response to opposition from the anti-density residents. Trobe said the local government needs to address the contentious issue of density and allow for a debate in the community as to the kind of neighbourhood they want.
