Chile and the Philippines chummy on geothermal

Filipino President Benigno Aquino III and Chilean President Sebastian Pinera took the opportunity at last week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Russia to compare notes on the geothermal energy and mining industries. In a show of south-south cooperation, the two countries agreed to share best practices with each other. Chile is interested in the success the Philippines has had with developing a privatized geothermal industry. And the Philippines seeks Chilean expertise on sustainable mining, as well as better management of the tax system.

Chile has a geothermal potential of more than 3,300 megawatts, according to Rome-headquartered Enel Green Power, which currently has eight geothermal concessions in the country. The Philippines is the second largest geothermal energy producer after the United States.
