China’s emissions will continue to increase until its per capita GDP grows five-fold, said its chief climate negotiator ahead of the Doha Climate Change Summit next week. Chinese negotiator Xie Zhenhua called it unfair and unreasonable to expect China – now the world’s largest polluter – to curb its emissions when its per capita GDP is still at $5000. Comparatively, he said, the carbon emissions of Western developed nations peaked at $40,000 to $50,000 per capita GDP. Xie said China’s carbon emissions are projected to peak at half of that GDP mark before stabilising, and then will start decreasing from there.
