Chinese demand for wood ignite illegal timber trade

The growing market for wooden furniture and paper in China is kindling the trade for illegally harvested wood and adding pressure to fragile forests worldwide, according to new findings from the Environmental Investigation Agency. The report said China has not acted on the wood importers and furniture makers involved and some of them are even state-owned. It added, while some of the illegal timber are used in exported wood products, the bulk of the logs end up in the homes of rich Chinese consumers who are willing to pay for teak beds and rosewood dining sets.
