Council will vote on the proposal to install 12 recharge stations in the CBD tomorrow.
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle says concerns about the availability of charging points are holding back the expansion of electric cars in Australia.
He says it is about putting electric vehicles in the forefront of people’s minds.
“It’s more about saying to people, this is what it would look like,” he said.
“If you were to purchase an electric vehicle, what is the infrastructure needed if you’re travelling into the city to make sure you stay fully charged.”
Mr Doyle says it would make electric cars a viable option.
“It’s just one more thing in the city to say we want a sustainable city but we also want a busy and a prosperous city and these things can go hand in hand,” he said.
