Representatives of Taipei and Beijing attended a nuclear safety working group meeting August 14-16 in the mainland Chinese city of Changchun, Jilin province, according to the ROC Atomic Energy Council August 20.
The meeting was the first following the coming into effect of a cross-strait agreement on cooperation regarding nuclear power safety June 29, the AEC said.
The pact calls for the two sides to create working groups, exchange information, establish a contact window for accident reporting and agree on the items and details to be reported, as well as the frequency and means of reporting, the AEC noted.
“At the meeting, the two sides reached consensus on the contact window and quarterly tests of communication channels by fax,” the council reported.
“Mainland China has also agreed to coordinate with us on emergency notification drills during our nuclear safety exercises at the Jinshan nuclear power plant in New Taipei City’s Shihmen District Sept. 4, while in the future exchange activities such as personnel visits and seminars will be promoted.”
In addition, Taipei and Beijing will take turns hosting a meeting to share experience in nuclear safety tasks at least once a year, the AEC said, adding that the 2012 event will be held in mainland China at year-end, with the agenda, time and location yet to be discussed.
