The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has allocated RM5 million to expand the network of cycling paths in the capital, which is expected to be completed by December.
DBKL deputy managing director Datuk Mohd Najib Mohd said the purpose of the project was to encourage citizens to use bicycles as a means of transport either to work, or at least to the nearest LRT station.
“For the project in Taman Melati, it has been completed and the public can cycle from their residence to the Taman Melati LRT station.
“At Taman Metropolitan in Batu Kepong, it is 90 per cent complete,” he told reporters after attending the Hari Raya Aidilfitri ‘dodol’ making programme, held in conjunction with the KL Car Free Morning programme at Dataran DBKL Sunday.
He said a masterplan was also put in place to expand the network of cycling paths in Cheras and Wangsa Maju.
The KL Car Free Morning programme, which began earlier this year, is held on the first and third Sunday of each month, starting from the DBKL building in Jalan Raja Laut.
It covers seven main roads, namely Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Ampang, Jalan P. Ramlee and Jalan Tun Perak, with about 5,000 participants every month.
