EVN to launch four major hydropower plants this week

Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) has said it will start construction of a 1,200-MW hydropower plant in the northern province of Lai Chau on Wednesday and switch on the first power generators of three other hydropower stations this week.

Lai Chau hydropower plant in the Da River basin is expected to be operational by 2016 in the initial stage and the entire project will be completed a year later.

EVN said it would commission the first generator of Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant in the central province of Quang Nam this Friday to provide some 680 million kilowatt hours of power for the national grid a year.

Also on Friday, after several months of test operations, Son La hydropower plant in the northern province of the same name will start running its first 400 MW generator. The station has six generators, so its total capacity is 2,400 MW. All construction work is expected to be finished by 2012.

EVN said it will officially operate the first power generator of Dong Nai 3 hydropower station with a designed capacity of 90 MW on Saturday this week.
