Firm to prepare managing waste guideline

Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (PPSPPA) is preparing a waste management guideline for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

PPSPPA manager for Federal Territory (North) Muhammad Fahmi Hashim said  the company is currently in charge of household solid waste.

This includes  plastic, carton boxes, pallets, and corrugated paper.

He was commenting on a Streets   report on    Dec 27 last year which highlighted  improper waste management at  Kepong Entrepreneur Park.

Business operators  had  suggested that a door-to-door waste collection for 600 premises be carried out in Kepong Entrepreneur Park.

On Sept 1, PPSPPA took over waste management and enforcement of waste regulation  from City Hall.

“We are currently conducting a survey on the amount of non-hazardous waste generation  from various industries,” he said.

“PPSPPA will select a few premises of different industries and come up with   a proper industrial waste management principle this year,” Fahmi said.

He said premises’ occupants must declare if there is any disposal of  hazardous waste. This falls under the Department of Environment Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) (Amendment) Regulations 2007.

Fahmi said SMEs are encouraged to recycle items as it could reduce the cost of  waste management.
