Tech giant Google has given a $3 million grant to the US Green Building Council (USGBC) to support research and better standards development for green buildings. USGBC, a non-profit trade organisation, has established the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building rating systems. The LEED system is the most widely used green building programme in the world covering 50,000 projects in 135 countries. According to Google, they are concerned about the lack of clear and accessible information on building ingredients exposing people to potential harm on materials they encounter everyday. The USGBC said the $3 million grant will be used towards research on safer, greener building materials, as well as to increase support from stakeholders across the industry.
