The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced its policy to increase the acceptable capacity of wind power generation in Hokkaido to 4,000 MW within 10 years from now. It will subsidize efforts to improve the electric grid in northern Hokkaido, where wind conditions are favorable, over multiple years starting from the next fiscal year.
This means Hokkaido will accept an additional capacity that is 1.6 times the current capacity of wind power generation in Japan of about 2,500 MW. This will be a seven-fold increase from the current acceptable capacity of 560 MW in Hokkaido.
