Green alliance promotes low carbon initiative in Taiwan

An environmental alliance comprising Taiwan policymakers and industry representatives will contribute to the island’s low-carbon development by generating energy-saving solutions, according to the European Chamber of Commerce Taipei.

The Low Carbon Initiative “aims to demonstrate European expertise in low-carbon solutions and initiate partnerships with the government and Taiwanese firms to speed up Taiwan’s transition from a fossil fuel-dependent economy to a low-carbon model for the world,” said ECCT Chairman Chris James while opening the LCI Exhibition and Conference June 12 in Taipei.

It will also facilitate power-saving efforts to help the nation fulfill its promise of lowering carbon emissions to 2005 levels by 2020, he added.

Other missions of the initiative include advocating policies in line with the goal of reducing carbon emissions, championing the idea of corporate social responsibility and promoting environmental education for the general public, organizers said.

The one-day convention featured an exhibition of low-carbon and energy-saving products, including building insulation materials, waste water recycling systems, innovative transportation ideas and renewable energy solutions, the ECCT noted.

The LCI, launched by the ECCT in 2011, is an alliance of scholars and more than a dozen corporations including Airbus SAS, Audi AG, Bayer AG and Mercedes-Benz. It aims to showcase European low-carbon practices to raise awareness of sustainable development to help Taiwan reduce carbon emissions.
