Green building movement spills into parks

Following a rating system for green buildings, the Indian Green Building Council now wants to develop a rating system for open spaces by 2013. The council is hoping to replicate the success of the ratings system for green buildings to ensure that at least a third of the urban space qualifies as a green space. Ratings for open spaces will target both public and private open spaces by providing guidelines on better waste management, water conservation and greening.

The council said the concept of green buildings – one that is energy efficient, conserves natural resources and generates less waste compared to a conventional building - is now catching on in India with over 1,795 buildings now registered, 295 buildings of which are certified.
