The Sixth Taiwan-U.K. Renewable Energy Roundtable Meeting, sponsored by the ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs and British Trade and Cultural Office in Taipei, brought together officials, specialists and industry representatives Nov. 4.
Their discussions covered offshore wind turbine installation, electricity grid connections and related financial and managerial know-how. They also exchanged opinions on environmental impact assessment and technical measures to deal with potential natural disasters faced by Taiwan’s offshore wind farms, such as typhoons and earthquakes.
U.K. Minister of State for Trade and Investment Stephen Green said his country’s advanced technology and innovative approaches offer great potential for collaboration in Taiwan’s active development of renewable energy.
The MOEA said the meeting was focused particularly on helping Taiwan’s government and industry shape a strong offshore wind power infrastructure. In accordance with the Statute for Renewable Energy Development, the ministry plans to work with the private sector to build an offshore wind farm generating more than 100,000 kilowatts of electricity per year before 2016.
Green, on his first visit to Taiwan since he took office in 2010, praised Taiwan’s extraordinary performance in cutting carbon emissions in recent years and said he expects to see more cooperation between the two sides in green technology and financial services.
Participating firms from the U.K. included BMT Group Ltd., Wood Group PLC and GL Garrad Hassan.
