Green Tech produces ‘clean’ charcoal

Filipino housewives can now buy green charcoal fuel that is produced through patented green charcoal technology.

Green charcoal technology, Gonzalo Catan Jr, executive vice president of Green Charcoal Philippines, said it converts bio-waste into green charcoal that is safe, cheap, environment- friendly and frees users from the danger of explosion.

Green Charcoal technology, explained Catan, converts bio-waste into green charcoal in the form of pellets, firelog and briquette and is environment-friendly. It is an activated carbon produced from coconut shell, coal and other forest wastes using a Toyota HI-ace 4-K engine that runs on 100 percent green charcoal hydrogen fuel, considered the cleanest fuel there is, in lieu of petroleum fuel which is harmful to the environment.

Activated carbon is amorphous carbon subjected to thermal treatment with oxidizing gasses and vapors or a mixture of bath (steam) to increase its adsorptive properties. It involves steam activation at 900c, thus smokeless.

Catan cited an article in Green Magazine, a science publication circulated in the United States and Canada, which expressed caution on cooking with gas.

Citing results of a research by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the magazine, in an article, headlined “Stop Cooking With Gas,” said one cause of indoor toxicity which allegedly is worse than outdoor air pollution, is the gas appliance which produces carbon and nitrogen monoxide, a reddish-brown gas with acrid odor.

The research, the article said, showed that nitrogen monoxide inhibits respiration by attacking the mucous membrane of the lungs which decreases brain activity by interfering with the transport of oxygen. This causes oxidation of unsaturated fatty acid of cell membrane.

Back in 1950s after years of careful observation, the article said, a doctor, Theodor Randolf, claimed that women using gas developed specific complex of symptoms and illnesses. He further claimed the prevalence of depression, circulatory problems, confusion, fatigue, memory loss among women cooking with appliances dramatically dropped as the exposure to gas stopped.
