Holes dug to cope with threat of flooding

The Living Environment Board (BLH) of the regency of Barito Utara, Central Kalimantan plans to dig 120 holes to cope with the threat of possible flooding when rainy season comes.

The holes called bio pore holes would be dug in various areas which prone to flooding in that district.

The district has few water absorbing areas, head of the board Tenggara Teweng said here on Tuesday.

Under the phenomenon of global warming , an area could be easily submerged by flood water in rainy season, and hit by drought in dry season, Tanggara said.

One of the solution to cope with the problem is by building water absorbing holes, a small hole with a diameter of only 10 centimeters with a depth of 1 meter in the form of cylinder.

Plastic pipe, 30 centimeter long is used in the upper end to keep the hole open , he said.

“The use of biopore holes is expected to reduce the threat of flooding in area prone to flooding in rainy season and to hold water in dry season,” he said.

“There is almost no more underground water in this district,” he added.

The district administration, therefore, through the Living Environment Board plans to dig 120 holes this year, he said

“The biopore holes will also improve the ecosystem , absorb water especially rain water to increase undergorund water reserve,” he said.
