Hong Kong-headquartered power company CLP has appointed Suzanne Cheung from Swire Coca-Cola HK to manage its environmental sustainability function.

Cheung moves into the role of principal manager, group environment, for CLP after more than five years with Swire Coca-Cola, which is the Hong Kong bottling operation for fizzy drinks brand Coca-Cola. She was head of public affairs, communications and sustainability for Coca-Cola in Hong Kong.

CLP has committed to achieve net zero emissions across its value chain by 2050. The company launched a decarbonisation plan in 2007 with Climate Vision 2050, and it has ratcheted up its commitments every few years to more closely align with the global 1.5⁰C warming goal.

It has pledged to phase out coal completely before 2040, and has meanwhile lowered the carbon intensity of the electricity it sells. Coal makes up 19 per cent of CLP’s fuel mix for electricity generation, with renewables contributing just 1 per cent.

Before joining Coca-Cola in 2019, Cheung worked for environmental groups and consultancies. She previously chief executive of campaign group Friends of the Earth HK.

Cheung started her career as a scientist with engineering firm Mott MacDonald. She later pivoted to consulting, working for the likes of Environmental Resources Management and Hong Kong Productivity Council.
