The Singapore government has commissioned a study to understand the energy consumption and environmental performance of data centres in the US, according to a report by ZDNet Asia.

Commissioned by the National Environment Agency, the study will be conducted by HP and supported by local ICT regulator the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA).

According to the report, the study will analyze energy usage patterns and operating conditions of data centers, evaluate current green data center metrics and identify areas of standardization.

The experts will guide the development of standards to improve data center energy efficiency, HP said.

This initiative is part of the governments efforts to promote energy efficiency.

In March 2010, the IDA announced the Green Data Centre Standard. The IDA says it is looking to work with enterprises to “examine the potential for using Singapore as a living lab to demonstrate the technical and financial feasibility of next generation green-enabling ICT technologies which promise to boost efficiency, cut costs and lower emissions.”

The Green Data Centre Standard is currently under development by the IT Standards Committee.

On Monday, IBM announced that it has invested $38 million in a new IBM Asia Pacific Cloud Computing Data Center in Singapore.
