How far are we from the Green Mark? The question begs a sustainable answer as citizens the world over are realising that the impact of not taking care of Mother Earth will eventually have an effect on us all since we dwell on this only planet we call home. Even as individuals the world over embark on recycling efforts and campaigning for the eco-friendly cause, governments across the globe too are starting to sit up and listen to the cry of the earth.
Singapore’s sustainable efforts
One of the countries to take a great leap of faith in converting its city into greener hubs for its citizens is Singapore. The Lion City’s ambitious plans to further push the green agenda is reflected in its quest to turn the tropical island city from its already established Garden City status to a City in a Garden, literally speaking. Despite being a relatively “late comer” in the area of green buildings as compared to countries such as UK, US and Australia, Singapore’s determined and sustained efforts to make up for lost time has seen the government setting the target to ensure that at least 80 per cent of all its buildings surpass the green standard by the year 2030.
