Water-treatment firm Hyflux has won a US$100 million order to build a desalination plant in Libya.
The firm said on Monday that the contract for engineering, procurement and construction works for a seawater desalination plant at Tobruk in northeastern Libya.
The project is the first in the country for Hyflux. It was awarded after an international bid held earlier this year.
The contract also includes operations and maintenance of the desalination plant for a period of three years from the start of commercial operations of the plant.
The desalination plant will use reverse osmosis technology and will produce 40,000 cubic metres of desalinated water per day when fully operational.
Construction will take 24 months from the time the company receives the go-ahead to proceed.
CEO Olivia Lum said even though the project is not as sizeable as some of Hyflux’s other contracts, she is pleased that the company is increasing its presence in North Africa beyond Algeria.
The company said the project is not expected to have any impact on its earnings for the current financial year ending December.
