India, on a green path towards sustainable construction?

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is on a mission to make India a world leader when it comes to sustainable construction by 2015. Amid a building sector that consumes 40 per cent of energy, generates over 30 per cent of solid waste, and emits 25 to 40 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, green buildings are seen as a middle path to close the sustainability gap. The IGBC said at present India is on a path to reach 100 billion square feet of built-up area in the green building sector by 2030. The IGBC has also strived to reach the residential sector, developing the first rating programme in India exclusively for the residential sector.
