Indonesia struggles with forestry maps and moratoriums

Indonesia is attempting to correct its incomplete forestry maps amidst complaints that the faulty, outdated maps and a weak moratorium on deforestation are hindering efforts to reduce climate change emissions from loss of forest. A government task force will complete field surveys this month to revise the maps used for the moratorium, which will need to be successfully implemented before Indonesia can collect on a US$1 billion pledge from Norway. Indonesia’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions is rapid deforestation caused in large part by palm oil plantations, timber harvesting, and conversion to farmland. Developed countries including Norway have committed to helping the Republic reduce deforestation by providing financial incentives for forest conservation.
