As part of a garbage removal initiative, the regional government of Jakarta has set a target to clean 128 rivers and conduits by 2015, stated a sanitation service official.
“Our target is to clean 128 rivers and conduits in the capital city from garbage by January 2015,” Budi Karya from the Refuse Handling Technical Management Unit of Jakartas Sanitation Services noted here on Thursday.
He claimed that his office had now installed a total of 1.2 thousand garbage filter devices or portable trash traps on the surface of the rivers.
“For instance, we have installed one on the Mookevart river surface. If it successfully cleans garbage there, we will remove and fix it on the surface of the Angke River,” Budi Karya remarked.
He reported that his office had also placed heavy equipment, such as three excavators at the upstream of East Flood Canal (KBT), downstream of the KBT, and at the Manggarai Sluice to facilitate the dredging work.
“We plan to buy five more amphibious excavators that we will use to dredge refuse and mud in the middle sections of the rivers. We will also use more styrofoam boats that will function as trash baskets,” he added.
