Channelling raw water from Tasik Kenyir in Terengganu to Selangor is an option over the costly Langat 2 water treatment plant project, Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said.
Currently, the Mentri Besar said the idea would only be looked into.
“We have many ways to solve the water issue in Selangor.
“Transferring raw water from the Kenyir dam is just one of them,” he said after his monthly meeting with civil servants yesterday.
Reiterating that Selangor has enough raw water supply, Khalid said an “efficient way of treating water” needed to be looked into, adding that the Langat 2 project was not the best solution.
“We need to see what is the best cost for treating water because it will affect the consumer,” he said.
“This will be discussed at a forum on June 12.
“Many new technologies will also be discussed, including portable treatment plants,” he added.
Apart from producing treated water like any other plants, a portable treatment plant could be transported to any location quickly, Khalid said.
On Sunday, Khalid claimed that the cost of channelling water from the Kenyir dam was only about RM700mil compared to the RM5bil needed to channel water from Sungai Pahang.
“It requires digging a tunnel under the Titiwangsa Range,” he said.
Khalid said water from the Kenyir dam could be transferred by installing pipes along gas pipes that ran from Terengganu to Pahang, Johor, Malacca and Penang.
