MHI to start EV operational experiment in UAE’s environmental city

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (MHI) announced January 17 that it will start an operational experiment of electric vehicles (EVs) in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. To pursue an advanced transport system, the company will deploy EVs and recharging infrastructure in Masdar City, an environment-friendly city being constructed near the Abu Dhabi International Airport by state-owned firm Masdar. The experiment will last for one year starting from this month.

Masdar City is expected to be completed in 2024 as a city that does not use fossil fuels. A personal rapid transit (PRT) system with automated four-passenger vehicles is being used in the city. The EVs will supplement the PRT system to achieve a highly reliable transport system.

MHI will supply an intelligent transport system (ITS) and study operation and management methods, such as a recharging method, that best suit the local climate and mode of use. The experiment will use ten units of Mitsubishi Motors’ i-MiEV designed for Europe.
