MOEA touts Taiwan PV technology creation

Nonfluorine backsheet encapsulants for photovoltaic modules, a newly patented creation by state-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute, is set to boost Taiwan’s global market share in the sector, according to the ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs Sept. 13.

“This unique niche market technology significantly increases the quality and efficiency of domestically manufactured photovoltaic modules,” an official with the MOEA Bureau of Energy said.

Environmentally friendly with better water resistance capability, no potential induced degradation and increased optical efficiency, the creation can boost nominal power output by 1.5 percent, reduce material costs by 30 percent and packaging outlays by 1.5 percent to 3 percent.

The technology was developed under the auspices in conjunction with the ITRI Green Energy and Environment Research Laboratories and Material and Chemical Research Laboratories.

According to the official, the creation will strengthen global competitiveness of domestic PV modules and manufacturers, and underscores the effectiveness of the MOEA’s Million Rooftop PVs Project, Expanding Overseas PV Market Program, and Industrial Technology and Research Promotion Project.

ITRI has transferred the technology to Kaohsiung City-based Kuo Hsin Technology Co. Ltd., which invested NT$120 million (US$4.05 million) in building a production plant spanning 500 hectares with an estimated annual output of NT$600 million.
