An NT$128.4 billion (US$4.2 billion) package of development projects centered in southern Taiwan was announced Oct. 13 by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications at the close of its annual investment conference.
The 53 public works comprise infrastructure and urban renewal projects near major transportation hubs in the region. One of the flagship undertakings is the NT$31.3 billion Kaohsiung Station redevelopment project.
MOTC Minister Yeh Kuan-shih said through a combination of tourism and transportation, the ministry has notched up significant headway by promoting private-sector involvement in public construction projects over the past few years.
“In addition to the Kaohsiung Station program, the Zuoying high-speed railway transit station and Taiwan harbor network investment projects are forecast to create a total investment of NT$13 billion.”
According to Yeh, Taiwan International Ports Corp. attracted NT$7.7 billion in investment this year after the facilities in Kaohsiung, Keelung, Taichung and Taipei were upgraded as Free Economic Pilot Zones.
“This momentum is expected to continue with the second-phase implementation of the FEPZ initiative, creating 4,000 jobs while generating NT$12 billion in output,” he said.
Around 300 prospective investors from all over the world participated in the one-day event held at Kaohsiung Exhibition Hall. The local contingent was made up of airlines, banks, construction firms, developers, retailers and shipping companies.
Other development projects spotlighted at the conference included Songshan Airport industrial corridor and Taipei Railway Station designated zone, each estimated at around NT$20 billion.
“The logistical and transportation advantages of these developments should see them optimise land use and further invigorate Taiwan’s economy,” Yeh said.
