Viet Nam Waste Solutions (VWS), the developer of the Da Phuoc solid waste-treatment plant in HCM City’s Binh Chanh District, has unveiled the design of a green waste-treatment plant in Long An Province.
Located on 1,760 hectares in Tan Lap Commune of Long An’s Thu Thua District, the plant will use advanced technology imported from the US to treat solid waste, including industrial, health and household waste for the Southern Focal Economic Zone, according to David Duong, president and CEO of VWS.
Work on the plant, which requires investment of US$700 million, will be carried out in a 20-year period.
VWS has completed a detailed design to be submitted to the Government for approval of an investment license for the project, Duong told the media at a meeting last week.
The plant will be able to employ from 6,000 to 10,000 labourers and handle 40,000 tonnes of waste per day.
The feasibility study for the project was finished in April 2008 and land hand-over was made in May, 2011.
VWS is responsible for the design, investment, construction and operation of the plant, called the Da Phuoc Integrated Waste Management Facility and Green Technology Regional Waste Management Complex in southern Long An Province.
VWS has spent $7-8 million on a geological survey and feasibility study, and has also designed a set of construction works with the help of US environmental experts.
During the first phase, the company will pump US$100 million into the project and it will call for further investment in on-going works.
The waste treatment plant is surrounded by trees and canals.
It has an environmental training centre nearby, and consists of standard landfills and a hi-tech sewage treatment facility, a compost fertiliser factory and a garbage-to-power plant with a closed system.
Duong said his company would collaborate with the authorities in southern provinces to build garbage transfer stations in order to deliver huge amounts of waste to the facility for treatment.
The waste-treatment complex can handle different types of waste from hazardous waste, medical waste, industrial waste, electronic waste and sludge to wastewater.
It aims to meet the waste-treatment demands of HCM City, Long An and other provinces in the Southern Economic Zone.
VWS is expected to complete an environmental impact assessment report by October, paving the way for the plant’s operation by the end of next year.
With an investment of $120 million, the Da Phuoc Facility became operational in 2007.
