With threats like overfishing, plastic pollution and changing temperatures looming over the world’s oceans, conservation groups are working hard to protect against biodiversity loss.

One World One Ocean, a multi-year educational campaign led by Academy Award-nominated MacGillivray Freeman Films, is using their recently-announced 2012 online video series to draw attention to the difficulties facing oceans and marine life.

The campaign’s video series, which will examine topics such as the sustainable seafood movement and the intersection of oceans and the arts, forms a part of OWOO’s efforts to “showcase and celebrate the importance of the world’s oceans, with the goal of catalyzing a movement to protect it,” according to a press release.

Their videos are also reflective of OWOO’s goal of highlighting the need for urgent action to protect the world’s oceans. Dr. Sylvia Earle, the campaign’s principal science advisor, said in a press release in October, “The world’s oceans are in trouble, but the good news is there is still time to save them. Our actions toward the ocean in the next 10 years will define the next 10,000.”

A 2011 report from the International Programme on the State of the Ocean found that a mass extinction “unlike anything human history has ever seen” is imminent if “current actions contributing to a multifaceted degradation of the world’s oceans aren’t curbed.”

Last year, MacGillivray Freeman Films also partnered with World Wildlife Fund and Coca-Cola to produce a film about the fate of Arctic polar bears.
