Gentari, the three-month old clean energy arm of Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas, has appointed a veteran in the energy sector as its inaugural chief executive officer.

Sushil Purohit, former president of Wärtsilä Energy as well as executive vice president and member of the board of management at Wärtsilä Corporation, will be joining the clean energy provider, an entity wholly-owned by Petronas, effective 16 January 2023.

In a press statement released on 2 December, Gentari said that Sushil has a demonstrated track record in the new energy sector. He brings with him 28 years of experience across 70 countries in the global energy industry, having previously overseen operations in the sector in the Americas, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.

“Building on the gains we have made since Gentari was first introduced, Sushil will aim to unlock new avenues in our quest to deliver clean energy solutions and capture opportunities in the energy transition,” said chairman of Gentari Tengku Muhammad Taufik.

As CEO, Sushil will be leading a team of experienced Malaysian and international energy professionals that aims to develop Gentari into becoming an integrated net zero solutions provider. Gentari, introduced by Petronas in June and officially launched in September, is currently pursuing its 2030 global aspirations of building its renewable energy capacity, producing clean hydrogen and capturing the market share of the electric vehicle ecosystem in key Asia Pacific markets.

In the press release, Sushil said that he hopes to make an impact in driving growth in the clean energy landscape, particularly in key markets where Gentari seeks to make inroads. “The pace at which the energy transition has been developing globally is exciting and I am pleased to be playing a greater role here [at Gentari].”
