Pinoys take to green buildings

The Philippines is betting heavily on a greener future as Filipinos have been among the top attendees in the Build Eco Expo (BEX) Asia over the years, an organizer of the green building event said yesterday.

“Filipinos and Malaysians have been leading those attending the event,” BEX Asia 2011 project director Louise Chua said.

The Build Eco Expo (BEX) Asia 2011, to be held at the Suntec Convention Centre in Singapore from September 14 to 16, is considered Southeast Asia’s leading exhibition highlighting sustainable building solutions.

This year, Chua said, organizers are expecting 230 international companies from 29 countries and regions to participate in the event.

Over 90 percent of the exhibitors will be exclusively showcasing sustainable building technologies, BEX Asia reported.

The number of exhibitors is 25 percent higher than the 200 exhibitors in 2010, BEX Asia added.

The three-day event will be focusing on green building architecture, design, products, practices, and technologies for environmental sustainability, Chua said.

“It (BEX Asia) has become the key event for the region’s Build Green community, to congregate and exchange knowledge of creating a greener and sustainable future,” Chua said.

“Additionally, with more concerns on climate change, reduction of carbon emission and sustainable/ renewable environment for the future, the building and construction industry can look forward to discussions on creating a sustainable environment with green buildings, the challenges and opportunities on retro-fitting existing buildings as well as materials and technologies for tropical countries like ours,” Chua added.

Felino Palafox Jr., principal architect and green urban planner of Palafox Associates, said BEX Asia provides a venue for exchange of ideas and discussions among regional green building councils.

This will identify best practices from which the Philippines can learn environmentally and economically, Palafox said.

BEX Asia started in 2008.
