The ubiquitous mobile phone is changing the face of farming for rural villages throughout the world, reports The Guardian. Access to information and communication technology - primarily through simple texting services - is giving rural farmers the information they need to make better farming decisions and investments. For example, in India media group Reuters and ICT firm Nokia provide current market prices and weather conditions, and NGOs and development banks are getting in on the action too. Still other groups, such as Syngenta Foundation-backed microinsurance programme Kilimo Salama, are using mobile phones to provide quick, affordable access to crop insurance.
