Public relations firm Redhill has appointed a head of sustainability for the first time.

The Singapore-based agency hired Marta Bigio from consumer goods firm Unilever as senior director of sustainability.

Her appointment signifies the firm’s efforts to “champion authentic sustainability,” it said in a statement.

Bigio was previously global senior communications manager for sustainable sourcing at Unilever in Singapore.

Over her career, she has held in-house positions at confectioner Mars and foam-clog company Crocs, and worked for PR agency Hill+Knowlton Strategies.

“It has never been more crucial to focus on sustainability and organisations today have a critical role to play,” Bigio said. “Companies must proactively work towards the meaningful application of sustainable initiatives and overcome the trappings of ‘greenwashing’”.

Redhill’s clients include consumer goods firm Danone, burger chain Carl’s Junior, insurer Tokio Marine and Singapore’s police force.

Tavy Cussinel, Redhill’s managing director, said Bigio’s appointment would help steer the agency’s efforts to promote sustainability programmes that are “genuine, effective and impactful.”

Redhill is the latest PR firm to hire a sustainability specialist as brand owners increase budgets to spend on environmental, social and governance (ESG) communications.

Agencies are under growing scrutiny for the climate impact of the clients they promote.
