Prototype turns waste into compost in one hour

A Nevada based green technology company, Ecologico-Logic Inc., has created a prototype waste reduction system that is claimed to be capable of converting waste into a nutrient rich compost in less than one hour.

Known as ‘The Muncher’, the company says that the aerobic digestion system uses chemical and biological processes to reduce the weight and volume of all organic and many types of inorganic waste.

The prototype achieves its high-volume throughput by combining mechanical efficiency with powerful, naturally occurring, aerobic (oxygen-breathing) microorganisms in a process that Ecologico said greatly accelerates waste digestion while doing no damage to the environment.

The company claimed that its prototype offers several potential benefits:

  • It turns organic solid waste into nutrient-rich plant food in less than one hour, compared to traditional composting which can take 45 days or more
  • It produces no toxic gases, hazardous compounds or foul odours, and will not pollute landfills or aquifers
  • It reduces the actual volume of solid waste by 75% to 80% - 1 ton (907 kg) of garbage is reduced to approximately 600 pounds (270 kg) of solid cake mulch and liquid effluent.

Mohammed Memon, Ecologico-Logic’s chief operations officers and co-founder said that the company is in active talks with a number of cities and privately owned waste management companies, both in the U.S. and further afield.
