PUB to beef up flood protection at four areas

National water agency PUB will carry out drainage improvement works at four locations as part of its efforts to increase flood protection.

The projects include work at Marymount Road, Queen Astrid Park, Benoi Road and Wan Lee Road.

PUB said works at Marymount Road will kick off this month, and involves the construction of a culvert at the junction of Marymount Road and Bishan Street 21.

The new drain, which runs under the road, will be located next to an existing culvert.

It will alleviate floods by improving the flow capacity of the drainage system serving the area.

PUB said as there will be excavation on the road, traffic will be diverted in stages to facilitate the construction of the culvert.

It added that inconveniences will be kept to a minimum as the number of lanes will remain the same and passable to motorists at all times.

The Marymount project is expected to conclude by end next year.

PUB will also carry out refurbishment work on old drains at Benoi Road and Queen Astrid Park, and raise the road level at Wan Lee Road.

These projects will commence in August, and are slated for completion in a year.

PUB said there are currently 29 drainage works being carried out across the island, including projects at Derbyshire Road, King’s Road, Meyer Road, Rochor Canal Road, Spottiswoode Park Road and Syed Alwi Road.

Besides improving roadside drains, expansion works at several canals are also ongoing.

They include Alexandra Canal (from Zion Road to Kim Seng Road), Bukit Timah First Diversion Canal (from Jln Kampong Chantek to Maple Ave), Geylang River (from Dunman Road to Guillemard Road) and Rochor Canal (from Jalan Besar to Crawford Street).

The projects will be progressively completed from the third quarter of this year to 2014.

PUB has completed drainage improvement works in Mandalay Road, Hua Guan Ave and Sian Tuan Ave, as well as road raising work at Balmoral Road, Bedok Garden and Telok Kurau.
