One year after Australia enacted a law compelling commercial property owners to disclose their energy-efficiency ratings, the scheme is already credited with creating a positive shift in the local property sector. Data show that more than 7 million square metres of office space have been rated under the National Australian Built Environment Rating (NABER) system in the past year and that only two, so far, have been found non-compliant.
The mandatory rules are pushing more buildings – even the major players in the industry - to strive for higher energy efficiency ratings now that the NABER system is one of the credentials used to benchmark them. Apart from this, building owners are also seeing higher savings.
