Safe havens for Borneo’s orangutans

Sabah authorities have increased the protected area for orangutan conservation in Borneo, bringing to 60 per cent the number of primates now living in conservation zones. Dr Marc Anrenaz, co-director of wildlife non-governmental organisation research group Hutan, said last decade only 30 per cent of orangutans were in protected areas. Orangutans, he said, are often found in timber concession areas and their survival will depend on the management of these areas. All timber concession areas are required by the Sabah Forestry Department to get certification from the Forest Stewardship Council.
