A shocking report from the Bruno Manser Fund shows the combined length of Sarawak’s primary logging roads is 88,111km, more than twice that of the Earth’s circumference.
The data which includes only primary logging and plantation roads was obtained from satellite images posted on the Bruno Manser Fund’s Sarawak Geoportal.
The satellite images also shows the extent of deforestation in Sarawak, that has left the state with only 11 per cent of primary forest, a far cry from the 84 per cent the government claims remain in pristine condition.
Apart from deforestation, a new study shows “Sarawak has the highest density of logging roads in Borneo”, high even by international standards.
Deforestation has also taken place at twice the rate compared to the rest of the world’s tropical forests.
The Bruno Manser Fund’s Sarawak Geoportal was launched earlier this year in an effort to reveal the Sarawak state government’s secretive dealings.
The portal contains key land-use information and provides information on deforestation as well as on the indigenous culture and politics of Sarawak.
