Some three million people in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur are expected to face water supply disruptions if the sudden turbidity of Sungai Selangor water to four treatment plants in Ijok continues beyond Monday.
“Production by the four plants declined from about 2,460mil litres daily to 1,000mil litres daily after recording extraordinary turbidity of over 6,000 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units) in the morning compared to 300 NTU on normal days,” Bernama reported Syabas corporate affairs division executive director Abdul Halem Mat Som as saying at the Sungai Selangor Phase 1 water treatment plant here yesterday.
The four water treatment plants Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2, 3 and Rantau Panjang supply 60% of water to households in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
Halem said it would be “worrying” if the turbidity continued beyond 8pm on Monday.
“It will result in disruption of clean water supply to about 700,000 water supply accounts for about three million consumers in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur as well as commercial and industrial users,” he said.
Syabas is investigating the cause of the turbidity.
Meanwhile, Syabas later issued a statement saying that there would be water supply disruptions in the Klang and Shah Alam areas from 9pm tomorrow to noon on Thursday.
It said the water cut was due to valve replacement works from the Bukit Raja Industrial pool to Bandar Sultan Suleiman and Selat Utara.
