Tapping the energy potential of South Asia is a must to revive the economy of the region, said India’s business leaders. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, president of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SARRC CCI), said that economic growth in the region will depend on an uninterrupted supply of affordable energy. Business leaders and the Ministry of New and Alternative Energy said there is a need to shift towards alternative energy to make the region more energy-efficient in the face of a 50,000 MW shortfall in power. South Asia has 150,000 MW of hydropower potential and about 5 million MW solar and wind power potential that it can tap.
