Mainboard-listed ecoWise Holdings, a renewable energy and environmental services firm, has been awarded a contract build a biomass plant at Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay at Marina South.
The firm said on Monday that it won a contract by the National Parks Board to design, build and operate a co-generation plant at Gardens by the Bay at Marina Way, powered by renewable sources and waste.
Horticultural and wood waste sourced and processed by ecoWise will serve as feedstock for
the co-generation plant, which can produce up to 0.9 megwatts of electricity and 5.4 megawatts of heat.
Construction will be completed in two years and ecoWise will continue to operate the plant for the next fifteen years following the commissioning of the co-generation plant.
The firm’s chairman and chief executive Lee Thiam Seng said that the firm was “honoured to be awarded this prestigious project to power what we view as one of Singapore’s national icons”.
“The Gardens By The Bay is said to set a new standard in the way gardens are developed and managed.This is a milestone for the Group as we will be able to showcase our expertise in the building and management of biomass co-generation system and technical competency to the world through one of our national pride,” said Mr Lee.
The Gardens by the Bay project adds to ecoWise’s array of projects under its renewable energy segment. In this segment, the Group currently operates a 1 MW (electricity) biomass co-generation plant in Sungei Kadut, which supplies electricity and thermal energy to a number of industrial users.
The project is the first Singapore based Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project to be successfully registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Beyond Singapore, the Group had inked a joint venture in Wuhan, People’s Republic of China (“PRC”) to convert an existing 25 MW coal-fired power plant into a biomass co-generation plant. The conversion is ongoing and the new biomass co-generation plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2010.
